All-Season & Winter Rooftop Camping in Canada

Rooftop tent set up for all-season camping
All-Season Rooftop Camping in Canada

Camping Season Doesn't End When Summer Does.

Some of our favourite rooftop-tent trips happen after peak season. Cooler weather brings quieter campgrounds, fewer crowds and a completely different experience. The right setup makes shoulder-season and cold-weather camping far more comfortable.

Build the System

Warmth Is More Than the Tent.

A good cold-weather rooftop setup works as a system. Start with the shelter, then think about insulation, optional heat, ventilation and what happens when the trip is over.

1. TentWeather protection and a sound platform.
2. InsulationDouble walls, insulated construction or an inner liner.
3. HeatOptional external heat when the setup supports it.
4. VentilationManage moisture instead of simply sealing everything up.
5. CareDry, air and inspect the tent before storage.
The Tent

Start With Construction.

Cold-weather capability is not one feature. Insulated roof and base construction, double-layer fabric, thermal liners, airflow and heater provisions can all change how a tent performs as temperatures fall.

Different Tents. Same Questions.

Whatever the brand, look beyond the shell. Sleeping capacity, airflow, insulation accessories, heater provisions and the complete vehicle-to-tent system all matter.

Optional Active Heat

Bring the Heat Outside the Tent.

A portable diesel air heater can add active heat to a compatible rooftop-tent setup. Cap-it carries Planar portable heaters, including the 2 kW model that pairs naturally with compact camping spaces.

The heater itself remains outside the sleeping space and warm air is routed to the tent through a compatible duct arrangement. Always follow the heater and tent manufacturers' requirements for placement, clearances, ventilation, ducting and safe operation.

Moisture Management

Warm Isn't the Same as Dry.

People breathe, temperatures change and moisture condenses. Cold-weather camping makes ventilation and drying more important, not less.

Use the tent's ventilation as intended and pay attention to moisture beneath the mattress and on interior surfaces. After rain, snow or heavy condensation, open and dry the tent thoroughly before extended storage.

Don't Pack It Wet and Forget It.

Trapped moisture can damage fabrics and contribute to odour and mould. Drying and airing the tent is part of the winter-camping routine, not an optional extra.

Common Questions

Winter Rooftop Camping, Answered.

Can you use a rooftop tent in winter in Canada?
Yes, with the right tent, conditions and preparation. Construction, insulation or liners, ventilation, moisture management and weather exposure all matter. Cold-weather suitability is about the complete setup, not simply whether a tent has a hard shell.
Does a hard-shell rooftop tent automatically make a better winter tent?
No. Shell style affects setup and travel characteristics, but cold-weather comfort also depends on the tent's fabric and insulation, ventilation, mattress system, available thermal liners and other design details.
Do I need an insulated liner?
Not always. A liner can add insulation to a compatible tent and is especially useful as temperatures fall. Some tents use other approaches, such as insulated structural panels or double-layer fabric.
Can I use a diesel heater with a rooftop tent?
A compatible external diesel air heater can be used with rooftop-tent setups designed to accept heated-air ducting. The heater should remain outside the sleeping space. Follow all heater and tent manufacturer instructions for placement, clearances, ventilation, ducting and operation.
How do I reduce condensation in a rooftop tent?
Maintain appropriate ventilation, avoid sealing the tent completely, manage wet clothing and gear, and air the tent and mattress area after use. Temperature differences and occupant moisture mean some condensation can still occur.
What should I do if my rooftop tent gets wet?
Dry it thoroughly as soon as practical. Do not leave a wet or heavily condensed tent packed for extended periods. Open it, air the fabric and inspect beneath the mattress before storage.
Which rooftop tent should I choose for winter camping?
There is no universal answer. Start with your vehicle and mounting system, then consider how many people are sleeping, expected temperatures, insulation or liner options, ventilation, heater compatibility and how often you will use the tent in colder weather.
